It’s no secret to anyone who knows me that I’m a huge fan of the Marvel comics.
When Robert Downey Jr started playing Iron Man, directed by Jon Favreau, I was obsessed. And then when The Avengers was slated for 2012, I couldn’t believe my luck! An old-school classic action series given a fresh look and new life? I couldn’t wait.
The film, which I saw with a great mate just back from Afghanistan, did not disappoint.
I may be a far cry from Margaret Pomeranz and David Stratton but this flick gets ‘film of the year’ from INTREPID HQ, hands down. And yes, I realise it’s only May. Only if the Defender film was released this year would The Avengers be pipped at the post. And we all know that’s a couple of years off!
What I loved about this great collaboration and collection of actors was the use of humour in amongst the action as well as the development of friendships and trust in the extraordinary circumstances the superheroes found themselves.
It requires complete suspension of disbelief from the audience, sure, but isn’t that what great entertainment can provide?
Like others, I get tired of action movies where major cities are destroyed by hyperviolence, because the destruction can seem over the top. However, in The Avengers the alternative is nuclear devastation, so the approach from The Avengers is somewhat justified.
My favourite line? When Iron Man is questioned by Captain America, asking: “Big man in suit armour. Take that away and what are you?” Downey – I mean Iron Man – responds: “Genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist.”
A favourite scene has to be at the beginning of the film, which opens on The Black Widow (Scarlett Johanssen) being interrogated. During that time, she takes a call. In no time the former Soviet agent is playing the interrogators at their own game, gathering intelligence against them, as she kicks her way out of the room, even while strapped to a chair.
All in all, The Avengers equates to total escapism. I give it five kick-butt stars.
